SANDS

Guernsey Sands (Stillbirth and Neonatal Death Society) Group provides support and care to anyone affected by the death of a baby in Guernsey. A very special all faith ‘Lights of Love’ service is held in St Saviour’s Church annually in the month of December.

Tumaini Fund

Our support for Tumaini in NW Tanzania began in 2005 with a ‘Buy a Brick’ stall to build the first church and nursery in the isolated district of Kabalekela. We followed up with a water drive for the first local well. Members of our congregation sponsor and pray for orphan families and support appeals for all sorts of resources from solar lamps, books and sewing machines to goats. Many knit blankets, jumpers, sew dresses and washable kits for orphan girls and we celebrate this outpouring of creativity and love in an annual Tumaini service of hope at St Saviour's.

Haba na haba, hujaza kibaba! (Swahili proverb) - Little by little, a little becomes a lot!

La Houguette School

Mark regularly visits the school to take assemblies and is occasionally involved in lessons too. At festivals the school holds services at St. Saviour's, Torteval and St Peter’s, and occasionally visits church as part of their curriculum. St Saviour's Church also runs a holiday club in May/June half-term which usually takes place at La Houguette school.

Eco Church

As part of our vision for our church in the future, we have formed a small team of Eco Ambassadors to explore how we can better care for God’s creation. We are on a journey towards reducing our carbon footprint as a church and as a congregation.

In early 2022 we registered with Eco Church. Eco Church is an award scheme run by the Christian environmental charity A Rocha. It recognises churches that are caring for the environment, through giving awards at Bronze, Silver or Gold level. The award takes five key areas of church life into account, including worship and teaching, church buildings and land, community and lifestyle.

Floral St Saviour

We are very grateful to Liz and the team Floral St Saviour for the colourful floral displays that can be seen around the church. From the war memorial to the spring tulips and daffodils, they really do make our church building look spectacular. Floral St Saviour are also involved in bringing nature to our Sunday Club, with gifts for our mums and flowers for all the church ladies on Mothering Sunday, as well as competitions for the biggest pumpkin and the longest runner bean in Autumn, and much, much more besides!

We take great pride in making our Church a place of celebration and joy.

An enthusiastic team of around 25 flower arrangers, not all of whom are church attendees, love to get involved. The Church is decorated throughout the year and we very much support and encourage each other.

At our five special festivals, at Christmas, Easter, the June Flower Festival, Harvest and Remembrance the Church is filled with flowers and decorations on every windowsill and various locations around the building. At these special times the children join in making pew ends and other decorations.

If you would like to join this friendly team and get involved, please do email stsaviourschurch@cwgsy.net. No experience needed.

Children and Young People

As a church, we aim for children and young people to feel welcome and at home here.

All the groups and activities in our church seek to give children and young people a sense of belonging and help them know God’s love. Everyone is welcome and nobody is left out.

Sunday Club

On the first Sunday of the month we have a Family Service at 9.30am where children join the Service. We have toy bags available for under 3s and Liturgy Bags for 3-11 year olds with books and objects related to each part of the service, helping children to take part in a way that is meaningful to them.

On the other Sundays, the service at 9.30 is Holy Communion. Children are welcome to come to this of course, but 3 to 18 year olds are most welcome to join in with our Sunday School, otherwise known as Sunday Club. Typically, parents remain in Church for the service, and children walk over to our Sunday Club room, “The Hayloft”, which is above the church hall, across the road from the church. The children explore faith and the Bible through stories, games, crafts, prayer and conversation. Everyone is welcome!

Crèche

At the back of church we have a small room that is used as a crèche during the service. There are toys, a toilet and baby changing facilities. There is also a tv screen on which you can watch the service as it happens! Just ask one of the Welcomers (near the doors with badges on), when you come into church.

Ignite

Ignite is our lively youth group for young people of secondary school age.

Ignite Discuss meets fortnightly on Sundays from 6 - 7.30pm. After sharing food, the young people and leaders come together to look at different aspects of faith and discuss some of life’s bigger questions in a safe and supportive space. There are plenty of games and lots of laughs!

Once a month Ignite meet for a social event, be it a games night, a safari meal, tennerfest or laser tag! In February half term Ignite take over Lihou Island for their annual retreat, which for many is the highlight of their church year.

Diddy Donkeys

Brand new for 2022! Diddy Donkeys is a group for babies, toddlers and their carers. We meet every Tuesday, in term time, from 10 - 11.30am in church for songs and a story, lots of toys, and plenty of tea and toast. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun!

Holiday Club

Holiday Club welcomes children in school years 1-6 to come and find out more about Jesus. The club takes place over three to four mornings in May half term, with lots of games, crafts, stories and songs.

Exploring Faith

Bible Study Group

Outside of weekly services we meet in small Bible study groups at each other’s houses. They are informal and usually led by established members of the church. They are a great way to explore the Bible in more depth whilst building relationships with others in the Church community.

Lent Group

The Lent group is a specific Bible study group usually consisting of five sessions during the period of Lent. They follow the same format of a Bible Study Group with a specific focus on topics surrounding Lent.

Woman’s Prayer Breakfast

Every second Saturday of the month Revd Tracy hosts our Women’s Prayer Breakfast at the Rectory. This is an informal get together to catch up over coffee and a croissant (or two), and to spend time in quiet, prayerful reflection.

Le Voyage

Launched in 2022, Le Voyage, is get together for 18-30 year olds who would like to explore Christian faith in a fun and informal way. Food is shared, friendships made, and the ‘journey’ through life is discussed!

If you would like to find out more about upcoming sessions please contact us.
